I have done rows for the last few years. My dad seems to think its the best way to do it. Its not. We end up having too much to harvest all at one time. For garlic, that works perfectly and its the way you should do it, but not anything else really, at least for what I grow.

So, Im going to do eight 2x2' raised beds. I like companion planting so this will allow me to control what is being planted with what to a high degree. I cant also spread them out all over the yard.

Tomatoes and peppers Im going to plant in reusable shopping bags. I did this on my deck last year and it worked great.

In the next month Im really going to hammer out the details of it all, but this is my plan so far.

Yep, I'm going raised beds this year too. I'm planning on several 4'x4' beds, maybe an 8'x4' bed for corn, and I'll have to build at least 1 2'x2' or 3'x3' bed for my daughter to tend. Trying to hammer out the details now, hopefully construction will begin in a few weeks. I'm also going to try the straw method for a row of potatoes too.

the book square foot gardening (a kvr reccomendation) is pretty solid as far as space efficiency , he did the calculations and found that square raised beds is enormously more efficient than rows.

We have three 4' x 8' beds and one 4' x 20' against the house. we did our toms in large pots. I took some big blue water barrels cut in half and have blueberries, peach tree and granny smith apple tree. Potatos in tires.

I have no clue how we are gonna lay out the beds yet. We have started seeds in the house already.

For my garden last year, I used two 4'x8' raised beds, 12 straw bales (I use them like raised beds), a potato cage, and 8 smart pots. I used the SqFt garden method in the raised beds, and ended up with a lot of food. I also tried to use succession planting, so not everything needed to be harvested at the same time.

If you're looking to do some container gardening, I highly recommend smart pots. They are cloth pots (almost a felt-like material), that help prevent your plants from becoming root bound while in the pot by "air pruning" the roots as they grow through the sides of the pot. They come is many sizes from 1/2 gallon to huge pots that are hundreds of gallons. I buy mine at the local hydroponics store, and I want to say the 25 gallon pots cost me $7.00.

So I got a good deal on some boards at the store. They were only $2 a piece so I got eight of them to make a couple beds. Picked up some weed guards, coir pots, and a few packages of seeds as well.

Here are a few pics of my beds.
