I had some stain left over from the trim on the house so I applied a quick coat on the outside
now at this point in time a friend of mine stopped over and I was showing him my progress. He asked me what I was going to use as a smoke source. I told him I was probably going to build a exterior rocket stove. He made the comment I should use a propane stove. I responded back I didn't want to use propane for a smoke source seeing as how I was trying to get more away from the grid and preferred to use wood. No he said, a stove made out of a propane tank. He told me he had a friend who could weld me up one and it would fit easily inside the greenhouse and would help maintain the heat. Besides, would I really want to keep running outside to stoke the fire? Makes sense to me.
It's a cute little design and I spent 5 hours or so burning off the paint
and applied a coating of high temp paint
since I was not using the lower inlet from the outside I capped it and back filled over the pipe I had installed.
I needed to cap the roof of the smoke chamber and with the angle of the rafters I needed something really thin. I rummaged through my shed and found a scrap piece of metal
I grabbed my saw and metal blade
after measuring the top of the smoker, I cut out the proper size piece
and carefully cut off the sides, leaving a flat piece of metal sheathing
and popped it up on the smoker
next I had to make the smoking racks for inside the chamber so I grabbed a 2x4 or made a line down the middle of the board
and marked center about every 6 inches
I used a 1 1/4 inch wood bit and drilled out the centers
and carefully ripped the boards down the middle, creating 2 equal sides with notches in them
I mounted one on each side of the smoke chamber
and set 1 inch dowels into the slots creating the smoking racks
I installed expanded metal in case I wanted to set ingredients on that instead of hanging them. I also extended the inlet pipe and installed a elbow to direct the smoke
I installed a candy thermometer I had laying around the house to monitor the internal temp of the chamber
and installed weather stripping on the 2x4 stop to prevent smoke from escaping
I then took high temp caulk and sealed the gaps along the top of the framing and the metal plate I had cut
I picked up some cheap 2x4 bar brackets to keep the doors closed
and cut down some extra 2x4's I had
I fired up the stove
and tested out the smoker
it works outstanding
I have since upgraded to a wireless dual probe for better monitoring of internal temps of meats
