After talking with KVR tonight on chat, I decided to put my tentative plan for my square foot garden up for critique. My plan is one 4’x8’ raised bed for corn, and at least 2 4’x4’ raised beds, possibly 3, for most veggies. I also plan to run one 3’x3’ bed for my daughter to tend, I’m thinking of putting the fruit in her bed. I plan on buying my seed from mypatriotsupply, and I plan on buying a seed vault and a salsa starter with my order, so some of these seeds will come from those two. Here is a list of what the plan is now, with some explanation below each section. Granted, this won’t be planted all at once, and it’s not laid out in the amounts of each plant that will be planted, but more of a total plan or goal for the season or even seed to store for next years growing season. Let me know what you guys think

Beans and Peas, pole/bush

Blue Lake Bush Green Beans

Romano Pole Green Beans

Black Eyed Peas

We eat a fair amount of beans at my house, and I’m hoping to have a high enough yield from the bush beans to can some after harvest. I plan on freezing any excess beans and black eyed peas as well.

Peppers

California Wonder Bell Pepper

Anaheim Chile Pepper

Jalapeno Pepper

Sweet Banana Pepper

I like peppers, the more the merrier. I have some experience with peppers, as I’ve grown several varieties in pots for the past few years.

Root Crops, Carrots/Radishes/Onions

Scarlet Nantes Carrot

Champion Radish

Yellow Sweet Spanish onion

White Spanish onion

Not sure on the carrots yet, but we eat radishes on our salads a lot, and the onions are from the salsa kit.

Cucumbers

Marketmore Cucumber

Cukes on salads. And I plan on turning some into pickles.

Leafy Greens, Lettuce/Cabbage/Broccoli

Romaine Lettuce

Buttercrunch Head Lettuce

Golden Acre Cabbage

Green Sprouting Broccoli

Salad, again, plus boiled cabbage, and I want to turn some cabbage into sauerkraut.

Tomatoes

Beefsteak Tomato

Roma Tomato

Rutgers Tomato

Cherokee Purple Tomatoes

Verde Tomatillo

Mmmmmmm, tomatos…. The Rutgers comes in the salsa kit, as do the Tomatillos. I may drop the Cherokee purples, they are more of a want than a need.

Squash, summer/winter

Butternut winter squash

Early Summer Crookneck Squash

Prolific Straightneck Squash

Black Beauty Zucchini

I’m up in the air between the crookneck or straightneck squash, and I may drop the zucchini too.

Corn

Country Gentleman Shoepeg White Sweet Corn

One bed, solely dedicated to corn or a three sisters planting

Okra

Clemson Spineless Okra

An old country staple, fried, boiled, or pickled.

Fruits

Crimson Sweet Watermelon

Sugar Baby Watermelon

Hales Best Cantaloupe

These will probably go in the 3’x3’ bed on trellises.

Most of the vining plants will be trellised as well, as per the square foot gardening method. I may try the three sisters method with the corn, planting beans and squash in the corn bed.

Wow, your list is very similar to what I planted last year. I've got two 4x8 raised beds that I used for SqFt gardening, and a bunch of straw bales that I plant the bigger plants (squash, tomatoes, etc...) into.

I hand 4 SqFt of green beans planted (blue lake and burgundy), and I ended up with more green beans than I knew what to do with! I think this year I'm going to build a deeper bed (mine are about a foot tall) for my root vegetables, especially the carrots. I'm not a huge fan of raw radishes, but I ended up planting mass amounts of them because I discovered sautéd radishes. If you've never tried sliced radishes, sautéd in butter with a little salt & pepper, you're missing out! Completely changes the flavor of the radish.

Also, I tried a SqFt gardening app on my iPhone last year. I think it was called garden tracker. It helped me track and plan my garden quite a bit. If you've got an iPhone, check it out.

Thanks for the heads up, I wasn't 100% sold on the idea anyway, but that pretty much seals it, it will be a 100% corn bed.

I have been working on my plan a bit.

Im going to do six 3x3 boxes. Tomatoes, asparagus, bell peppers, jalapeno, carrot, broccoli, brussel sprouts, onion, potatoes, and beets. Companion plant them, except for asapragus, that will get a 3x3 all of its own.

90' of cedar, seeds, mulch, and some good soil should not set me back more than $150. Ive got twine and anchors.

Should be a good set up. Something that should be a bit easier to maintain being I cant be around it 24/7.

I've got to agree with Kvr about the 3 sisters in a SqFt garden. Space in a SqFt garden gets taken up with a quickness, which is why I use straw bale gardening for the bigger plants.

B17- I'm jealous. I want to plant an asparagus bed so bad, but since it takes a year or two to get a harvest, and they can last for like 10-20 years, it just doesn't make sense because I'm planning to move next year.

When I built my beds, I also mixed my own soil. I followed the "Mel's Mix" recipie exactly in one bed, and it wasn't cheap. In the second bed, I used the same ratios, but I used pearlite instead of vermiculite and coconut husk instead of peat moss because they were both cheaper. I had excellent results in both beds, so next time I build a new bed I'm going with the cheaper options.
