I moved on to weeding out the garlic and onion bed

7071449931_3f5200aaf2_z.jpg

it was so bad I just ripped everything out and I'll replant this weekend

6925381924_0558d7d6ff_z.jpg

I wanted to do a little test to see what would be better to burn off the beds with, black versus clear plastic, I think the key is clear plastic to create a greenhouse affect. I had a extra square I hadn't planted last year

7071461949_875286d9b6_z.jpg

so I put down some clear plastic

6925385618_4b4e269185_z.jpg

and set the square on top, It will be interesting to see which one does a better job of killing off the weeds

7071472935_a2207f0136_z.jpg

the bed is ready to plant

the goal this weekend is to get the blackberries cleaned up, I need to open up the pathway up some so we can get a mini excavator back there to build a pad for the barn

6925418618_9d1ec52b4a_z.jpg

I got to rip out all the stray runners, it's amazing how far blackberries will send them out

The weather has been beautiful the last two days so we have been spending it all outside in the garden. I was going by my tangle of a mess I call a asparagus patch

6925439350_57d4905868_z.jpg

and the asparagus was starting to sprout

6944089414_e88422f941_z.jpg

I grabbed my gloves and started weeding, I had bought these 2 year old root sets from wal-mart last year, I'll probably let them go to seed this year, cut them back and start harvesting next year

6944093450_1a13ceb5cb_z.jpg

while I was working on that my wife started clearing out the strawberry plants, they do really well in our boulder retaining wall, I think the boulders retain heat and warm up the soil faster plus they are backfilled with sand, all I know is we get strawberries usually 2-4 weeks before everyone else I know

6944090976_9f75b57fdf_z.jpg

all done, I need to start transplanting some into our upper retaining wall, but I've been saying that for the past 3 years

7090162885_a28a878346_z.jpg

she then moved onto the grapes and blueberry beds

6944095114_260a275460_z.jpg

time to order some more mulch

7090169447_79e0b6b733_z.jpg

while she was working on that I moved onto the rhubarb patch

6944095936_bc41e537aa_z.jpg

looks like one of the sets didn't make it, rip little fella

I was talking to one of our larger local farmers the other night about their planting schedule and such. He said they had put peas in over the weekend and they can usually get three plantings a season with them. I thought I was doing well with two! So I figured I would get some peas in the ground yesterday.

6944097922_47b3be6fe9_z.jpg

the plastic did a good job of killing most everything off except for some weird zombie looking lettuce. It begins!

6944099334_1fe6ed9e01_z.jpg

Everything came out quick and easy, it will be interesting to see how well the plastic did at killing weed seeds over the next couple weeks

6944101196_a1d038d432_z.jpg

this is how I plant in my square foot garden. Even after gardening for awhile and basically growing up around farms and gardens, except for a few plants I still suck at telling the difference between a weed and a sprouting seedling. After one to many times of pulling the wrong thing, I started using what I call seedling rings

7090172181_0e08f49de2_z.jpg

basically I took 2 inch pvc and cut the pipe into 1.5 inch pieces, I space them out to the required proper spacing and plant my seeds inside the rings, everything that grows inside the ring I leave alone, everything outside the rings it's game on and gets pulled.

7090172629_e31f93b10e_z.jpg

I put 2 seeds into each ring, as they sprout I will trim the weaker one

7090173723_44db1166de_z.jpg

I give the rings a light covering of soil and water, once the plant is growing, I will slide the ring off the plant before it gets to big

7090174645_ff4150420e_z.jpg

planting those peas got me into the planting mood so I decided to clear out the rest of the asparagus bed and the pea bed

more zombie lettuce

I think I'm going to run to johnnies today and pick up some things, peace

I had ordered this deal the other day from markdown.com,

http://www.markdown......zYwfHwxNjE

I figured it would take a week or so to get but was surprised when mail man dropped off a package today

the seed vaults were secured in bubble wrap

7110270279_fd1f76a31f_z.jpg

all the extra items in the deal

6964200876_d95f9520e9_z.jpg

the vaults were well sealed

7110278701_c5e8f1b0a3_z.jpg

seeds included in the vault are clearly marked on the outside of the container

7110276923_905b855f7d_z.jpg

I decided I'm going to test out the vault in the garden, I am only going to use these seeds and see what type of results we get. One vault is going in the pantry, one is going into the ground, now I need to work on my layout
