nice work there KE. good luck with your garden. are you planting any marigolds etc in amongst your veggies to help keep pests away?

your name reminds me that i just recently bought some emu oil. supposed to be the slickest smoothest natural oil known to man. supposed to be great for helping nutrients absorb into your skin.

Hey KE, good luck with your garden. I know I'm excited to see your progress.

I did watermelons for the first time last year. I had three plants and got 7 melons. They were delicious.

I trellised them and actually tied them up with pantyhose (no, not used) This seemed to work fine. It supported them and expanded as the melons grew. Here's a pic of mine from last season

A quick update.

The tomatoes hit the dirt on March 18.

The melons continue their relentless march. One even opened its leaves today, but the others are still hanging on to their seed shells.

And everyone else seems to be pretty happy.

We had a snow storm today, and the rest of the week looks cloudy. Given we have no lights I am a bit concerned things might go downhill this week. I am going to keep my eye on things and if it looks like we are taking a turn for the worst I am going to grab some lights for them asap.

I am thinking fish emulsion for fertilizer until they hit the outdoor soil. Any thoughts?

that is a really cool idea, i've never seen that before. normally with my melons i have just laid a screen over the plants at a 45 degree angle. so you're placing the melon inside the panty hose and then tying the hose to the trellis? does it help with pests at all?
