I tried the square foot gardening last year with one 4x8 bed. I had limited success, a decent amount of Jalapenos but not much else. My pea plants grew for a little while before the bottoms of the plants died. I am thinking of doing a bigger one this year and treating the soil better before planting.

Is there anything I should do now (I live in TN btw) to prepare virgin soil for a garden?

How much did you pay for the weed guard?

Do you just dump your dirt at the end of the year into a compost pile or leave it there?

I would imagine finding a guy who has some manure would be a good start. Get a compost pile going now so you can use it next year.

This is who Im getting my seeds from by the way:

B, the weed guard was 15 dollars at walmart, you can use cardboard as well, the soil just stays in and keep improving each year

my first question is what were you planting, your spacing, and what were you planting next to each other? This has a huge impact in your results.

I thought about taking some out and dumping it into the compost bin, then mixing it back in the next year. Maybe there is no need to do that.
