my first question is what were you planting, your spacing, and what were you planting next to each other? This has a huge impact in your results.

Just the usual stuff: Roma tomatoes, bush beans, one each of squash and cucumbers, green peas, and jalapenos. I just used the spacing listed on some of the square foot garden sites.

I had the tomatoes along one side (the north 8ft side), with the green beans and peas next to them, with the squash, cucumbers, and jalapenos on the other side.

Do any of you guys notice that a raised bed need A LOT more water than a traditional garden? At least mine did. I think that may have been my problem last year.

This year I am going with a bigger garden, probably still square foot but not raised, and I am going to compost/fertilize the crap out of it.

I have lots of clay in my soil, what do I need to add besides some sand to loosen it up?

P.S. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!

thanks doode. there are many different ways to garden, not every method is applicable in each situation. Even with the square foot method the roots still go deeper then the 6 inches, they will grow right through the weed fabric. If you have heavy clay I would break it up and improve it and then put your beds over the top of it. Yes the beds drain quicker but I'm not sure that's a bad thing. Quick and I had this discussion before where over watering can be just as bad because you develop a shallow root system versus the roots growing deep searching for water. Good mulching around your plants is key so the water doesn't just drain away imo. Logan Clark is a big proponent of mulching versus heavy watering, it's all about finding a balance. I posted a video last night called back to eden, he does a amazing job with soil improvements

I wish Logan Clark would post more. He had some really good garden threads/posts.

Picking up my wood this weekend and will put those together. Fill them up most likely next weekend.

There was a special, end of aisle, stack of wood. It was 1x10's all cut at 4' length. I said screw it and bought eight of them. They were $2 a pop. That will make me two beds. Bought some heirloom tomatoes and peppers as well. Some weedguard and coir pots as well. Walked out of there spending $40.

On one of the websites I found searching about raised beds they talked about putting chicken wire down first before the weed guard to prevent moles from getting to your roots. Is this really an issue? None of you guys have mentioned the chicken wire so I am thinking it is not necessary. What do you think?
