I have read here and there that if you drop the roots of your green onions into water, and put them in a sunny spot they will grow back and you'll have perpetual green onion!

We gave it a try with some we used 3 or 4 days ago and things have been pretty good so far. The shortest layer is the original cut, everything else is new growth.

Has anyone else done this long term? With only water I can't see the onions getting the nutrients they need. I am wondering if the taste will be there going forward given the all water diet.

My understanding is they do not need to be transplanted. Maybe that would be best, but the vast majority of what I see on this is full grown onions chilling out in a glass of water.

Transplanting must be the missing link for the long term.

I just saw a pic of this on our facebook wall, it doesn't say anything about transplanting, interested to see your results
