How'd this work out?

^I'm doing the same thing now. I'm using some partially rotted wood and some from a tree that the hurricane brought down. Also incorporating wood mulch, leaves, compost and grass clippings under the soil layer. I'll be planting plenty of beans, comfrey and yarrow to help build nitrogen to offset all the carbon in the bed from the wood and other browns.

Definitely interested to see how MM's worked out last year. From what I gather, they suffer the first year but really start to see the gains in the second and beyond.

I have the Toby Hemenway book Gaia's Garden. It's one of my favorites now, but I'll admit I had to go through it twice before things started to click. It is currently my "go-to" permaculture book and an incredible reference. The plant lists for the different layers and all of their properties are amazing. There's a chapter on beneficial insects and the plants that will attract and provide habitat for them, sections on using animals, creating micro-climates, ponds, cachements and using both rainwater and graywater. I am currently finding the section on buiding guilds very useful and I'll be giving my cherry tree some much needed help. The only shortcoming in my opinion is that in the whole book, I think there's only a small 1/4 page section on hugelkultur. Maybe he just doesnt want to step on Sepp's toes.

seems to be going good, I should have put smaller stuff in there to decompose faster, this will be the third year we have had them in the beds so it will be interesting to see our results this year

Here's a few pics of the progress I made today. It was rainy and the sod I rolled up was frozen, but eventually I was able to get it layered on top of the wood. Next week I'll add in some garden soil and I'll probably plant in 3-4 weeks. Until then I'll just let the rains do their thing and get the bed going.
