so it's been a week, I figured I would check out how the pickles are doing
looks good, smells good
so I fished a pickle out,
I sliced it up, middle was good, brine was forming a inner rind
it tasted awesome, could taste the garlic and dill, rinkus stopped by and he seemed to like them, I chalk this up as a success

HELP! My husband has left me home with a bunch of cukes, a package of MrsWages Kosher Dill Pickle mix and some miscellaneous canning supplies. We have never canned before and quite honestly it scares me!! I have some Ball jars and some new lids, but old bands :-(. Can I use the old bands or do I need new ones. Recipe says I need to use a "non-reactive" pot ...From what I can tell my pot is "aluminum clad stainless steel", others not marked. Any suggestions? Also, we have a large crock pot with a plastic lid...Wondering if I can stir up the mix I have in a the crock pot and leave in crock like you describe?? I do not want to kill my family :-/ Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
@mbinks the bands will be fine, you are just using them to hold the lids on till they seal, you will hear them pop when the vacuum kicks in, then remove them, water can get trapped underneath and cause the lids to rust over time, do not use the aluminum clad pot for boiling the mixture, the crockpot won't get hot enough to boil, we have a enamel pot that we use for boiling for canning like this
are you wanting to can or make crock? just follow the directions on the mrswages and you will be fine, the only issue you will have is you might not get a seal, you can either reprocess them in a water bath, or just stick them in the fridge and eat those first, just be careful when you remove the jars from the water bath, any breeze can cause the jars to shatter, turn any fans off close the windows, I usually lay a towel on the table to keep any temp shock from the surface and they drape the towel over the top of them to prevent any drafts to get to them, here is the process
