sounds great to me. I'm gonna order one of his seed vaults, along with some other stuff, to use in my plantings this year.

We were perusing the aisles at walmart when I noticed they had put some seeds out, I was surprised to see them out so soon

I said to my wife we should grab some seeds and get some hardy things started in a cold frame, her response, you don't have a cold frame, point taken

So I started wandering around the store to see what I could use, and there they were

closeout storage totes for Christmas Trees, they were on sale to!

So I grabbed one and a couple of different types of seeds. I grabbed some Jiffy starter pellets as well for my little experiment. Last but not least A cheap 99 cent thermometer

So when I got home I set it out on my front patio, instant coldframe/greenhouse.

I popped the thermometer inside to monitor the temps.

I grabbed some heavy comforters and blankets from the salvation army to cover it at night to keep some warmth in, I'll keep you posted on how the experiment goes!

After I was done with that, I checked my windows and they were unfrozen

So I threw them on the tires to start getting the soil warmed up.

time to wait.

I buy seeds from quite a few different places, but my favorite is the sustainable seed co. Even with the discounts I get at other places, sustainable is usually cheaper. Also, every fall they start selling "grab bags" as a way to clear out all of the last year's seeds. I think the grab bag costs about $30.00, and you get about $50.00 worth of seeds in it. You don't get to pick what seeds come in it, but it's kind of fun opening it up not knowing what you're getting. I've bought two grab bags from them, and both were filled with a very diverse mix of seeds. Mostly vegetables, but I also got a lot of different grains, herbs, and beneficial flowers.

I think those totes are a great idea Kvr. I have a pretty ghetto green house that I put together last year. I started off building a small shed, but didn't finish by the end of summer (I only got the floor, frame, roof, and door done). To protect the wood from the elements, I wrapped the whole thing in industrial plastic wrap, and cut out a section for the door. It worked awesome last year, so I purposely left it the way it was to use again this year. It ain't pretty, but it works!

^ Haha, damn! Guess you'll be waiting awhile still to give those totes a try?

Yea, the grab bags are pretty awesome. I'm really not even planning on buying any seeds this year, as the two grab bags I bought, along with last years left overs will be more than enough. Hell, I think I've got something like 18 different varieties of just tomatoes!

Went and checked the inside temp of my frame, it is currently 26 degrees with a 24 mile per hour wind outside.

It is a balmy 86 degrees inside my frame!

Tomorrow, I PLANT!

(as long as I get no more of this)

You know KVR, living in So California I'm almost envious of your situation. We literally have the opposite problem out here in that the sun/heat during the middle of summer is really intense.
