So I had been monitoring the temp in the cold frame over the last couple days and to be honest I am quite impressed with the performance of them so far. Today I was maintaining temps of around 92 degrees. I had hoped to get this started the other day but we have been dealing with inclement weather and had to push it off till today.
So I grabbed a couple boxes of the peat discs and spaced them out onto the lid of the tote.
Since the patio is made out of cement I decided to insulate the lid from it while it is resting on it. I had a extra heavy blanket so I folded that up to place the lid on.
I took some warn water per the directions for the peat discs and poured it into the lid making sure the discs were in water.
I replaced the thermometer and lid to the tote. I will monitor the discs over the next few days, once they have expanded to one and a half inched tall, I will drain the water and plant some seeds.
If I can get some seedlings to sprout, I will transplant them into my greenhouse/smoker we had built last October.
Normal planting season in Maine in Labor Day Weekend, last year we were able to plant in the middle of April due to our hoop houses we had built.
Starting this early is new territory for us but it will be interesting to see if it works. I covered the tote with some extra blankets to keep them protected from the night time cold. Don't laugh it's going to work. I have faith!
