I have also heard of smacking the trunk of the tree with a mallet, I'm giving my non producers 1 more year or I'm going to cut them

how long since you planted them? Some apples take 3-5 years before they produce. Also, from what I've read, you need to have at least 2 like trees planted in the same area to ensure pollination.

are they flowering in the spring? do you often have cold snaps after they begin to flower? that could be causing it too.

we planted some in 2008 and some in 2010, the 2010 ones are to soon but some of the 2008 ones aren't even flowering, we have several different types of apple trees, so pollination shouldn't be a issue
