I love splitting wood. That was a big plus for me when I bought my house, it has a wood fireplace in it. I've thought about experimenting with this and seeing how well it works splitting oak, I think I've got an old tire or two in the basement somewhere.

I burn mostly birch and split that, for me it works awesome, I don't have the tire attached though. I just have a large enough splitting block and the tire just rests across the top

Ive had the luxury to serve the community a time or two for chopping wood.

Its technique. Give me a maul and I will show nice firewood cuts. Need stacks of wood to dry, no worries.

You pick up, one hand below the maul and another at the far end, under the head, and in a heaving, natural , sweeping motion with the swing, slide the hand down to the base of the handle with the other one, and complete the swing with your power showing here, nowhere else. Minimal effort. Momentum will carry it down, give it a push. Hand/eye will come into play with practice. Its really a natural movement and you allowing the implement to do its job.
