went and looked around for parts, can't find a suitable T fitting that looks like that, think a series of reducers to the size of a ball would work?

Yeah, but you need to house the reducers in something that can seal and attach to the main pipe. Make sure your diverter chamber isnt too short also. I've seen a ton of examples where they are well over 5 ft long.

Would be on a larger scale but could you use the ball off of a ballcock valve on a toilet?
