So, when I decided to take the job in Flint and buy a homestead just north of F-town, the Mrs. and I knew we would probably encounter some interesting characters; however, never would we have guessed that I would encounter what happened yesterday.

I had my Dad over and we were working in the backyard when the guy who owns acreage behind mine (his house is a half-mile behind me) starts some routine target shooting. He does this from time to time and I never think anything of it; he is far enough away from my place for a handgun/shotgun to be safe (rifles are not legal to use in our area). After a few shots, I hear something whiz by and hit my neighbor's shed, the next shot, I hear something whiz close to me and hit my shed, followed by a bunch of shots with bullets whizzing around us grazing my grass. My Dad and I run for cover, use my cellphone to call my wife (she was inside) and tell her to take the kids to the basement immediately, and then proceed to crawl to my truck and drive to the house we think the shooting is coming from.

After pulling into a few driveways, we figure out which house it is, pull in (greeted by an oversized confederate flag, of course) and begin to walk up to the door; two guys come around the side of the house and Guy A yells for us to stand where we are. Since they were obviously drunk (bud cans everywhere) and armed, we obeyed. Then I explain that I live behind them and that there is live ammo whizzing around my yard and that he has also hit my shed. Guy B proceeds to tell me they are only shooting 9mm and .45 handguns and that it isn't possible for either caliber to shoot that far; I responded that I didn't care what they were shooting and that I have kids and would not tolerate live ammo flying on my property. Guy A mentions they are “just sighting in a scope” and I then reiterate I have a hole in my shed to prove it and I won't tolerate ammo flying on my property. He asks what I wanted from him, and I told him I want nothing more than his ammo to not be on my property again. He then proceeds to tell me he will only shoot 9mm and .45 and that doesn't travel near that far (with a snide smirk).

Obviously, whatever they were scoping in was something hotter than a pistol. He didn't shoot anymore after that, but the Mrs. is terrified now and wants to move pronto.

Starting to think we moved a little too close to Flint. What a mess.

Damn, I can't blame the wife, if she doesn't feel safe in her own home, then it's not home. I would talk to the police chief and see what they recommend.

Thought about that actually, but it's a total good-old-boy's club up here; doubt the police would do a thing. There has been a few things like this that have happened since we got up here; we may end up moving farther away from Flint in the spring. We shall see.

I am hoping not but being close to Flint certainly could make it an interesting sell. I guess we will see in the spring.

I would still contact LEO and see what they recommend, even if not local pd, sheriff or state

jonathco, if you are worried about the local good ole boys club including local law enforcement, contact the State Police.  They are who investigate local LE when it's needed.
