Thanks for adding these! I like the layouts. Would you guys be concerned with having the chickens so far away from the house? I haven't had chickens before and this is our first year on the homestead. I know there are racoons, possums, and some yotes around -- I was assuming I would need to shoot predators in the middle of the night. I figured it would be easier to check up on them if it was closer to the house... but maybe it isn't a concern? Or if the enclosure is built right you don't care if there are predators around?

We plan on free-ranging the chickens and I imagine if predators are coming around at night they might eventually try coming by in daylight hours when the chickens are out and about and most likely I won't be home.

Our meadow is like the first picture but much larger. Sort of like a big rectangle with the house at the southern short end.

Thanks KVR, good info. I will harden the chicken run (yet to be built) -- my coop is already pretty stout. We live in the middle of a national forest so I assume we are going to get plenty of critters coming through.

we had upwards of 2k chickens when i was a teenager. kept them in a cinder block house specially made for them about 50ft away from our main home. never heard any noise from them, never had any problems with predators either. except mongoose i guess, those were some ill tempered little bastiches but they spent all their time looking for snakes so no big deal really.

Good to know a predator proof structure can be built! I think I convinced my wife to put the chicken coop on a part of our yard that was down wind. She was dead set on it being in a particular part of our yard this is *upwind*. I could see that ending badly.
