I think this is a good example of the reverse, what do you do if your children lose their home and are facing financial ruin? Well if you're this woman, you convert your shed into this and give your home to your daughter and grandchildren.

Not many people understood why Monica Smith began working on her 8×10 shed in the back yard… and then they laughed when they realized she was turning it into a tiny cabin. It seemed strange that she was putting so much effort into just a shed. But it wasn’t just a hobby. Her youngest daughter and 5 children lost their home. So, Monica decided to give them her own and move out to the back yard.

This may be the coolest grandmother ever.

great thread.

my wife and i lost everything in early 2008 and had to move in with my parents with my two sons (5 and 1.5 at the time) it was stressful to put it mildly, but we made it work. we were out in a little over a year. couldn't come a day too soon...lol

when the time comes for my parents to need that same type of assistance my wife and i will be there for them. financially they're set. between my parents combined retirements/SSI/VA/investements over 10K a month and the fact that they almost own their 900K home free and clear i don't stress about them financially. however, i do worry about their health. we're battling with my dads sister in northwest IN right now over the proper care of my dads father. its taken a huge emotional and financial toll on the family. like, its gotten so bad my dad wasn't going to go back for his fathers funeral bad. its been fucking horrible at times.

so we decided that if they get to the point that they need our help we'll either move into their place or they'll move into our place. whoever owns the bigger home. simple as that. they cared for me as a child, i'll care for them when they need the same help.

besides, i still have so much to learn from my parents in regards to hunting, farming, canning, etc that i'd be a fool not to include them as our family grows.
