I suppose I could have written the post to better clarify. I wasn't calling it an "attack". I was quoting a dictionary definition that uses the word "attack", but the context in the definition isn't necessarily using "attack" in the context of being aggressive, rather it carries a spectrum from "conversational rebuttal" to "hostile verbal attack". In this way it is more like saying address one's rebuttal to the topic, not the person.
It was an abrupt bounce far enough back in the conversation as to not be in context with where it had gone (self-representation). It did not follow a logical flow (non sequitur), and it does in fact imply that I'm missing something, which is addressing me and not the subject (ad hominem).
Let's try that bit again minus the dictionary definition and see if it reads differently...
In general public discussion groups on the Internet tend to frown on "ad hominem arguments". You haven't in fact responded at all within topic. You are welcome to respond to the topic...
