I am a citizen of Canada. A resident of Costa Rica.
Basically I can get health coverage, (80% coverage for roughly 30 US a month)drivers license kind of thing from CR. While at the same time being able to go back to Canada whenever and it is like I never left for paperwork.
Residence applicants do not have to give up their passport of origin.
Tax wise ... I have to stay a Canadian because I own some % of Canadian companies that are government regulated. Regulated as far as a certain % must be owned by Canadians. I pay taxes in Canada on holdings, taxes in Europe for stuff there and Costa Rica makes me pay next to nothing. If the things were unregulated then I would only pay my 300 US a year or so here in CR.
Well, besides who would give up a American or Canadian passport? North Americans seldom need visas to travel, Latins rarely are given visas since they have little reason to return home.
Basically have not countries are restricted with travel. So if I gave up my Canadian citizenship chances are Canada would not give me a visa to get into Canada anymore.
Lots of people just come on a tourist visa and buy whatever they want (house, car)and leave every 3 months across the border and back.
Hope that explains it more clearly?
