I went to a Detroit Tigers game last year and had to walk through some areas with abandoned buildings as far as the eye could see. I got only a small first-hand glimpse of the barren and forlorn conditions that exist across more than 40 square miles of that city and it felt like I had been transported to another world. It is encouraging that there are people with vision staying to create something good - and there are a lot of people doing some pretty amazing things. There's a really cool project to create a 27 acre farm with greenhouses and a distribution center using an abandoned high school. It will be a slow turnaround, but they're smart to start by trying to meet people's basic needs so there can be hope for a truly productive community one day.
