I try and set 1,5 and 10 year goals for myself. Sometimes I hit them, sometimes I don't.

One year goal is to finish up all the projects at our place so that is finally done.

Five year goal would be to build the cabin on our new land and get that property set the way we wanted.

Ten year goal, my daughter has finished college and is establishing her own life as a contributing member of society. Wife and I sell the restaurant and partially retire on one of the two properties, we will both 52. I see myself being a front door greeter at wal-mart for twenty hours a week or something.

What's your goals?

1 year - Get out of California, and settled on the family homestead in West Virginia

5 year - Family property paid off free and clear, have a small cabin built for myself

10 year - Be fully self sufficient, with several in house revenue streams: definitely a small stabling operation - everything else is still conceptual at this point but I have a few ideas such as doing some hunting outfitting during the winter and maybe having a small herd of sheep to harvest wool from.

short term goals right now are just to survive the economic crisis we are facing at work. Long term, once the kids graduate high school, my wife and I are contemplating trying to build a homestead on her family land.

Strong possibility. The county I work for is facing the largest municipal bankruptcy in history, and they lobbied the legislature to sponser a bill that would have allowed the county to make up for some lost revenue (around 60 million). It died in the senate, so now we are looking at the possibility of losing more than half of the workers for the entire county come October unless something dramatic happens. Mind you, the county has already laid off about 1/3 of the workforce it had when I started here, so cuts have already been made. Luckily the S/O was largely spared in those cuts, but I don't see us being that lucky again if it comes down to it. I've faced the threat of lay off for the last three years, and it used to make me a nervous wreck, but I've decided this time not to get caught up in the panic, if it happens, it happens, and I'll go from there.

Funny thing happened yesterday. Before I went to work for the county I used to work for a small municipal PD. Stopped by there yesterday just to see some of the guys I used to work with and shoot the bull. Looks like I've got a part time job there now, pending approval from their city council. As soon as I went in, the Chief handed me an application and asked me if I'd consider coming up there part time to help out. We then started talking about the possible cuts I may be facing at my main job, and he told me if it happened he would do what he could to get me on there full time again if I wanted it... Guess somebody was looking out for me.
