An entire garden, being taken care of by children, completely wiped out by thieves in North Omaha.
Joyce Bayly tends to the garden at Sherman Community Center with the help of neighborhood kids ages 6-12. Over the holiday weekend the unthinkable happened. Thieves dug up and stole 50-75 fruit and vegetable plants from the garden.
"I was horrified, I couldn't believe that somebody would actually come and do that. They're taking away from the kids down here," Bayly explained.
Many of the plants were close to their full growth. The children planted and weeded, so they could enjoy fresh produce and even take some home.
"You shouldn't have to make a fortress around it to keep people out of a garden," said Brook Bench, the Acting Director of the Omaha Park And Recreation Department. "Hopefully they're having a hard time sleeping at night I know I would. It's pretty disheartening."
The Omaha Parks Department hopes to do everything they can to get the garden replanted soon. Already local organizations have come forward to donate new plants and seeds to the garden.
The Omaha Park & Rec Director says by the way the plants were dug up they think someone may have replanted them in their own garden. They have contacted police.
If you'd like to help with the garden contact the City of Omaha Parks And Recreation Department at 402-444-5900.
