There is a reason it is quotes.

I had heard about this app for awhile now and never really utilized it. We have a cable modem with wireless router in our house and I'm not sure if it's all the cement and iron in the house or what, but you can be 10 feet away from the wireless router and have a horrible signal.

So last night I was online and the signal was starting to drop from our home wireless so I decided to download the app and give it a shot. It took all of one minute to install and I had it up and running in about 45 seconds.

from their website

FoxFi enables WiFi or Bluetooth Hotspot on your Android phone - no tether plan or rooting required! This is a new Android app with great reviews in Android Market. Bluetooth mode works for all phones. WiFi mode currently works on most Samsung/Motorola/LG phones and new HTC phones with Android 4.0 (HTC One etc). WiFi mode does NOT work on Motorola Droid 1, Motorola Triumph, Samsung Admire, LG Revolution or older HTC phones, use Bluetooth mode instead. Connect your tablets, computers or game console with WPA security. FoxFi usage is covered under your phone's existing data plan.

To install, on your phone go to foxfi.com or scan the QR code on top of this page, this will bring up FoxFi in Google Play Store.

*Sprint has removed FoxFi from Play Store. Sprint users must install/upgrade FoxFi from http://foxfi.com/bin instead.

the speed difference was astounding, I don't have exact numbers but from struggling with page loads on our home network versus running the wifi right off my phone it was a marked improvement,

So who would this be good for? People who get good phone reception but their only internet option is dial up. People in remote locations with no service at all. This would work great for us on our new land because the power poles are about 2500 feet from our land but we get great phone signals. People wanting to save money, cable internet is 50 dollars a month, you could save that by just using this app.

So this is why the free was in quotation marks, to utilize it you need a droid phone with a data plan which runs 30 dollars a month but if you already have the droid phone then you already have a data plan. Also if you are a large consumer of bandwidth you want to make sure you have a unlimited data plan which the phone companies are doing away with but if you already have one like I do with verizon, they are grandfathering the current data plans in place. But even with the new data plans sizes for people that just surf the web and e-mail this might be a viable option.

Thought I would share

update on this, I found connecting with the blue tooth is more stable then the wifi, more secure as well I would imagine, here are the directions for using the blue tooth mode

http://foxfi.com/bt/win7.php

when that is done just right click your phone under devices and printers and choose connect with access point
