Any specific information about these areas:

Iron Mountain

Iron River

Lanse

Ontonagon

Negaunee

I'm just curious, what made you interested in the UP?  That's a long way from Alabama.

I'm originally from Chicago and believe it or not, I miss the winter. We are looking for some place out of the way to start a semi-self sufficient homestead where land is reasonable. My wife's sister also lives in Lansing.

Actually my wife is from West Palm Beach Florida and not so sure about the winter. I took her up to Madison Wisconsin one winter, but besides that the most she has seen is a couple of inches of snow at once. She's a gamer though and figures if her sister came from West Palm Beach and likes it in Lansing, then She can do it too.

yeah my wife had the same concerns when we first moved to Maine, one positive for you is her sister in the area, it was pretty difficult for my wife the first year since we didn't know anyone up here

How does the weather, area, and land prices compare in Maine to the UP?

weather wise it's pretty comparable, the UP probably gets more snow due to lake affect, Maine has a lot less population density, Bangor has a population of 30,000 people and is the third largest city, we are pretty highly taxed though, Maine usually is in the top three for that, housing and land it all depends where you want to be, you can get some pretty remote land very inexpensive, we bought 30 acres a couple years ago for 16,000 and it's about 20 minutes from Bangor, you get north of Bangor and it get's really inexpensive, there's not much up there for work since most of the paper mills have shut down

Anything along the coast and in the southern part of the state will be pretty expensive
