I bought a book at Tractor Supply a couple of months ago that said you could be self-sufficient on 1/4 of an acre.
I haven't been able to finish the book but I was a bit skeptical of the claim. 2 acres sounds more realistic.
We have 5 acres total but unfortunately most of it is hilly and what is flat is almost pure clay.

That's sort of the same situation I'm in Doode. We have almost 2 acres, but for the most part it is wooded and hilly. The "yard", I won't call it a lawn because it's mostly weeds and crabgrass, is pretty rough clay soil. I think I'll do ok with my raised beds, but I only plan to supplement what veggies we eat with them.
Hopefully, once the kids are out of the house in a few more years, we are going to try to build our own homestead on some land that my wife's family owns. They have several thousand acres, but it is truly remote, so it's not really an option as long as the kids are in school.
