We clean ours once a year. We had an older, non-air tight stove installed for a few months out here and I think that led to whatever soot we had in the chimney -- which was a small amount. Now with the new air-tight stove we routinely get the stove up to 400 to 500 degrees. I am not really worried about any creosote.

I always thought the non air tight always produced less because you couldn't control the air and it burned hotter creating less creosote

Could be. I heard that the ability to dampen down an air-tight stove at night better let to less creosote vs. non-air tight using really wet logs or something.

Hmm, maybe I'm doing it wrong, I always leave our wood stove door cracked

it burns better believe it or not, we have very small fires, if I loaded up the woodstove, it would heat us right out of the house

Do you have an air damper and a flue damper? My stove came with an air damper. Once it is running hot I can close the air damper and it restricts how hot it burns. Makes it very easy to keep it a certain temp in the house.
