how come so many places use electricity up there? cheaper install? electric company rebates in the past?
I think it is the up front cost differences that drive it. To put the house over to natural gas about about $8,000, of which roughly $1,500 came back to use in rebates. We probably made obsolete $500 to $1,000 worth of electric heaters.
It is still the same game you see home builders up here playing, go cheap now to keep the price low. Some how buyers do not factor in the increased expenses down the line. Laugh now cause the price is lower, cry later when the bills come in.
Natural gas has gotten a lot cheaper lately as well, so I think a lot of new homes go with forced air gas.

Honestly, despite the temps, it's still been cheaper than last year for us. Last year we had the original furnace from the early 70's and junk aluminum windows in the house. This year, I put brand new windows throughout the house and replaced our aging furnace with 96% high efficiency unit. We have kept the house warmer than last year and it has averaged about 45-50% lower in cost per month. I got no complaints.
