personally, I would go with the atv. I'm not sure how much easier it would be for plowing though, I have heard mixed opinions on that. I think you would get more use from the atv from hauling stuff, rides with the kids etc. Have you priced any out? What do you think you could get for the tractor if you sold it?

Now is a great time to get a good deal from somebody on their ATV, especially in Michigan. Plenty of young adults and teenagers have quads that they want to get rid of to get snowmobiles. I would just crush the Grand Rapids area CL

An Atv is not really designed for that but can be used for some lite duty work. I have friends that have used them to plow with, but that usually means having to plow several times during any kind of real snow fall. The winch cables break and the plastic gears inside the winch snap with overuse. The transmissions can develop premature wear also. A tractor is a tool that when properly taken care of will last decades. A rear blade is not ideal for plowing snow because of constantly turning around. I have a snowblower 3pt and it works great, but kills my back after much use. I would stick with the tractor for now even though its a pain and then save your money to upgrade your tractor when the opportunity allows.

I was thinking of trying to trade the tractor for an ATV -- I think my tractor is worth between $2500 and $2800. From what I have seen, I could fine a late 90's early 00's with 325 or higher cc and 4x4. Usually with a plow, but that isn't a huge deal. I actually have never ridden an ATV.

Good points rinkus. I think I only plowed ~10 times last year. It never got bad except for when my tractor broke down... then I couldn't clear out the snow when only a few inches fell. We waited until a lot accumulated and paid someone to come out and plow.

What about a Jeep YJ? 1992, 5 speed, 120k miles. One is in my price/trade range. Does not have a plow, so that would have to be sourced separately.

Plowing is tough on the frame of a Jeep. They arent really heavy duty imo. If its just light plowing in your own driveway though then i wouldnt be too concerned about it. Jeeps are great but the only ones that I've heard are prone to some problems are the YJ's. That mileage sounds low, is that original mileage or is that on a rebuilt engine?

I don't know specifics on the YJ's. Interesting about the Jeeps and their ruggedness. I am not a Jeep guy and don't know much about them but I thought people liked to use them because of their solid front axle. People are still using Willys Jeeps out here with a plow and I think those have very little power.

I need to plow snow from a 1/2 mile dirt road. Some curves but no elevation changes.
