All this time I've been longing to live in rural Russia and wasn't even aware.

I posted this article a couple years ago talking about how Russians survived their collapse in the 90's, it's an interesting read

the whole culture of the dacha is fascinating.  I read the article last night and then spent a few hours reading articles and looking at pictures of dachas.

Dachas are a little different from rural farms, in that city people have a small plot in the suburbs that they travel to on the weekends.  When times are good, people grow lawns and use it as weekend entertainment.  When times are bad they grow food pretty intensely-they use their harvests to get them through the winter or to supplement their incomes.

Most dachas have a small house, usually with no plumbing or electricity, and an outhouse.

Ahh Romania

Romanian light snack.

That pantry/cold storage you posted in the series KVR is what I think of when I envision a good cold pantry.

This picture has been making the rounds over the years comparing American neighborhoods to Swiss, but it's basically the same thing as a Dacha, people in the city have small country plots with a garden shed on them from what I have read
