I think there are quantity limits as to how much you can brew. On the show Moonshiners, if they catch them at their still, they'll go to jail. So it's not just as simple as trying to sell it.

it is illegal to make moonshine, unless you fill out the forms and pay the taxes then you can legally make ethanol for fuel purposes

it was illegal to make beer and wine until the Carter Administration when Jimmy made it legal, as far as why is moonshine illegal? I saw moonshiners for the first time the other day, one of them said it best, it's all about the tax money, the amount of taxes on a bottle of liquor is quite staggering
