good article on mistakes made

I would assume that most people reading this are either homesteaders or folks with homesteading in their heart. I believe we have chosen a very rocky road to tread down. Mainstream life in the second decade of 2000 isn't about the basics of life and the simple things. I know all I can do with my cell phone is make a phone call. How can I feel so outdated when I'm at the mid-point (okay a little past) of life? Homesteading just seems to get into our blood, whether from heredity or from a shot of "there has to be a better way." But once we are infected, we sacrifice and dedicate ourselves to hard work to see our vision come into reality. Having made the choice, it was time to begin the initial phase.

To start with, we needed a location for the grand adventure, and to gather supplies and knowledge. We traveled around the West Coast and spent hours upon hours on the Internet. In August 2004, we bought 23 acres in Northeast Washington. Actually, purchased it site unseen. Now this could have been our biggest mistake, but we were fortunate that it was a wise decision.

That was a good read. i feel like the difference between hia approach and mine is that he basically went cold turkey. Jumped from a job to homesteading without much time between. It just doesn't seem a good fit for me. As a nurse, I can make a decent living working 3 days a week, with four to spend on building a homestead. Getting a routine down of the necessary daily chores, and then planning larger projects for my days off seems much more doable than dumping everything we have into a project that could end our marriage if it failed. I guess I want my garden to be something my family can enjoy donig together rather than our only food or income source. Which would quickly turn something i like to do into a drudgery.

Def. like BA's plan. It was a good read, but a little depressing when you read that he started out with 4 generations on his homestead and now it's down to him and his son. Def. got the feeling that homesteading led to the end of his marriage.
