I am not expert on police K9s but a strong tennis ball drive is the thing trainers look for in a good student. Every good K9 tracking dog I have ever worked around was high energy and crazy for tennis balls. They use the tennis ball as a reward for performing their job well. My pup recognizes a tennis ball but seems more interested in curling up on my feet and napping than chasing a ball. But I wasnt looking for a working dog, so that works out well.
He has been bread from a Czech line of German Shepards. They have different coloring than standard US show lines. The Czech lines are known to be more suspicious of strangers fiercely loyal to their family and a hardier animal all around. I have been waiting almost nine months for the right dog. I chose this specifically as I wanted a dog that would protect my family and home. I dont want to see anyone get bit, but my house is almost half a mile from a secondary dirt road and then three miles from pavement. So if some stranger finds their way out here and ignores the private drive, do not enter and posted signs my sympathy has evaporated. We are changing home owners policy to cover him as our old provider did not allow anything other than labs and little poodles. I will be signing up for obiedence classes with a local trianer as soon as the next one starts.
