I was speaking with some friends if mine who run another local business and it turns out their parents own 140 acres in one of our warmer climate areas (+10 degrees). Apparently, they have a few rentals on the property, one of which is currently vacant. It has a newer chicken coop, greenhouse, is next to a multi fruit orchard (which we would have full access to), the property has river front access for steelhead and salmon, we could have bees, a dog and livestock.
I believe from talking about other structures on the property that all buildings including this house are made of redwood which is highly durable and rot resistant.
They want $600/month for it. We currently pay $725 for our apartment, which of course lets us do none of the above. The only catch that I know of so far is that the drive would be an extra 20-30 minutes each way everyday for work.
We feel this would be a great opportunity to really get a feel for homesteading before we buy land.
I'm going to arrange a viewing, what are your thoughts?

sounds like a good opportunity.
Lower your lease and get to grow some of your food.
You say the comute is slightly longer but the quality of life will be enhanced and the fact that you lower your other expenses will compensate for the extra transport expenses

Thanks guys. I followed up a bit more on it. It sounds like that house is newer, so it isn't likely made of redwood. The heating is a gas wall heater 🙁 we were hoping for wood stove, but that's a minor thing. It also doesn't get cold enough here to need much more than flannel sheets anyway.
Three spring fed wells on the property with three 5,000 gallon water tanks. Also has it's own dedicated PG&E substation.
