For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, there is a really great program my family participates in once or twice a year. It's known as WWOOF (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms). You can find their website at http://www.wwoof.org/ if you are interested in this program and want more information than I can give you in this thread.

Basically the gist of it is, folks who are interested in organic farming, homesteading, permaculture etc. are matched up with folks who have farms, projects or opportunities to work in a homesteading setting. So if you have a farm, they will hook you up with people willing to work in exchange for the chance to learn from you. You provide living space and food, and they do the rest pretty much.

This was my first WWOOF'er experience, and I had a really good time with the folks we had out.

Our group this time out was a family of 5 from England. They were really great house guests and a lot of fun to work with. They are the five folks to the right of the goofy looking guy in the black hat.

They helped me build the 4'x4' garden bed you see in the right of this shot, as well as the baby gate trellis on the right.

Mostly what they worked on was the foundation for the earth bag house my sister is working on.

They did a lot of work helping us dig the trench for the french drain around the perimeter.

Everyone got a chance during the week to swing the pickaxe.

We also attempted (with marginal success) a pit roast with lamb, some potatoes and some burdock root dad and the boys helped me dig up that afternoon.

Threw some rocks in a fire.

Dug us a hole while they were cooking. Note: if you try this, your hole should be pretty small. Just big enough to fit your rocks and food, no bigger. Our grub didn't quite get done because we dug our hole too deep and all the heat got trapped at the top, instead of cooking our supper.

rocks went in

then the meat and veg

then covered with some sticks

then some boards and dirt for good measure

About 3 hours later we took everything out, and it was only about halfway done :(

Next time, we'll make the hole a bit smaller.

In addition, we also did some survival fire making techniques, and a bit of butchering, and some work with the horses, all of which I don't have pictures of. All in all, everyone worked really hard, and I think everyone had a really good time as well. I couldn't have asked for a better group of people on my first time out.
