I'm not really sure.  Has the world changed?  Are people more evil today?  Are we exposed to more of this "evilness" via TV, movies and news so we can envision it happening to our kids more easily?  Or is my kid just different and I worry more about him?

I think it's probably a combo of more bad people and lot more exposure to the acts these people do.  Had the Adam Walsh thing happened in 1973 or so, I doubt I would have had as much freedom as I did as a kid.  I do try to be more hands off with my son though, especially now that he's getting older.  There's a saying in scouts- Never do for a boy what a boy can do for himself.

With so many more people, there will be more bad people. My kids are grown now, with kids of their own so I can have hindsight perspective. I like that boy scout motto. I understand why parents are so worried these days, but the fact is, I was worried too, and so were my parents. I  guess it is just the nature of parent hood.

I don't know, I think statistically the world is safer then when we grew up in the 70's and 80's

Oh, no doubt they were worried.  I had to call my mom when I got to the comic book store and before I left on Saturdays.  But I don't think parents hovered and were as over protective then.  I think about all the stuff I did, and I doubt I would give my son the same freedom that I had.

it's definitely a different time, we use to ride our bikes through town with my best friend's shotguns slung across our backs as we headed out to the gravel pit to do some shooting, today I would have to show my ccw and my free range card :(

wow.  My mom was a barmaid and I was never allowed to sit at the bar.  Do remember one day hustling quarters from all the old timers at the bar.  lol (that sounds bad)
