Didn't know where to post this, if wrong place, mod's please move to correct place.
Any of you homesteading people out there make your own soaps? For those of you who do, what kind(s) do you make. I'm interested in getting into making soap, as I think it's another homesteading skill that will come in handy one day, so any helpful hints/suggestions will be most appreciated.

My wife has been thinking about this as well, we have some fat from our pigs in the freezer that we are going to render down to use. I want to try making the lye from wood ashes. Figured it would be a good winter project.

Nothing fancy, just something very simple that I can use for bathing, dishes & laundry. I remember my grandma making soap outside & we'd cut a few small slices into the dish water or bath water or even laundry, we used that soap for everything, as dish soap & such wasn't around back then (50's), or at least very accessible in our small ND town. I too, have some leaf fat (that I get from a lady who raises pastured Berksires), which I render myself into lard, which I want to use as the base. I'm not into the fancy soaps.
