So I have this one feeder, a cedar birdhouse, filled with Black Oil Sunflowers.  Birds love the stuff.  So do squirrels.  The problem is that the birds are now too scared to land there.

Ive got a standard shepards hook that its hanging from.  The squirrels just climb right up it.

I tried to attach an empty juice bottle to the shaft of the hook and that stopped them for a while.  But now they climb up and jump right up and over it.

Most baffles sold in stores are meant to go around a wooden post.  The shepards hook is too thin and doesnt have the diameter to properly attach the baffles Ive seen in stores.

How can I stop them?

Im in the city otherwise they would be dead via BB gun, fyi....

Oh...

Ive thought about putting it closer to my house and front windows in the hopes that its now just "too close for comfort".

  • switch to safflower seed
  • mix hot pepper into the sunflower seed (shouldnt bother birds)
  • vaseline/petroleum jelly/cooking spray on the shaft of the shepherds hook
  • dog in the yard
  • .22

Those are the best I can come up with real quick.

Yes, I have thought about it.  But what should I use?  I dont want it to give the birds problems.
