From a "pest control" perspective, ideally bird feeders should be as far away from the houses as possible. The spilled seeds can attract rats and mice, and the last thing you want is them being attracted to your house. Also, bird feed should be stored outdoors or in an out building. Bird seed is notorious for having stored product pests (ie Indian Meal Moths and various types of grain beetles).
