do those things ever work? I see they claim victories but how do they correlate the petition with the change?

I signed one that saved a dogs life. A police officer entered a closed gate, and knocked on an open door to his home. The dog and one other came to greet the "new people" at the door and one of the officers kicked him, and promptly got himself bitten. Officer friendly tazes the dog, and he winds up on death row. The petition saved the dogs life and got a MI law changed.
