great points MN, how do we make that change? Do you think that the percentage of people who have a interest in this is so low that there will never be one?

People have to want to make the change.

Homesteading is hard work.

Many people seem to have an aversion to hard work these days.

I would have to say, the people I showed my house as we were building it, the people over 50, got it, it made perfect sense, the 40 and under all thought I was nuts, and still do for that matter

its going to take AT LEAST one or two generations doing the opposite to undue the damage done by the egomaniacal baby boomers and their compatriots.

I'm a baby boomer. I grow or wild harvest quite a lot of my own food, and put up for the winter what I don't eat in the summer.

Although I am not comfortable with the killing part, I enjoy butchering.

I have a rain water system and an outhouse.

I don't shop at Walmart, and spend very little at the grocery store.

I'm not a consumer.

Mr. Negative,

Don't judge an entire generation for a situation created by greed that began before the generation you are judging.

i'm making my judgments based on living in the most populated state in the nation and interacting with 100's if not 1000's of people a month due to my job. people who want to live off the land and be self-sufficient are the minority. especially when you live in a place that is at the forefront of tech...

I hear you mr. N.

For most folks it is too much work. They would much rather go to the store and watch tv.

It's really easy for me to come up with all the things that I think are wrong with the world today. Unfortunately, one of the things I think is wrong with the world is that so many of us are arrogant enough to think that we know what's wrong with the world. Try and wrap your head around the absurdity of the notion that, if everyone just listened to you, things would be so much better.

Take a breath, live well, others will follow, or not. I think some of the problems that article describes are problems that any fad will have. One of the great truths in life is that people overestimate what they can do in a year and underestimate what they can do in 5. They want every change now and it doesn't happen. They get discouraged and abandon it. Sadly, sustainability and preparation is now a fad instead of part of our culture. Someday, if we don't try to move to fast, we'll probably be able to insert these concepts back into our culture. The way to do that is through consistency and non-judgmental encouragement. Kyle, you do a great job of that BTW.
