Ags make a huge difference in traction but can tear up grass very easily. Turfs do well in snow because they have lots of contact points with the ground, R4's are tougher and steel belted but aren't as soft on grass as turfs. R4's don't do as well in snow as turfs. I probably wouldn't need chains if I had turfs but I would probably with some of the dirt work I have done if I had turf tires -- the grooves easily fill up with mud/dirt compared to an R4.

The traction of Ag's and chains are what is needed here with the amount of snow we get...130+ inches a year. People with 4wd even put chains on all 4 tires for the winter, especially if they have hilly land.
I tear up lawn if I drive on it with Ags and chains, especially when it's wet or a melt down. bu, normally I am out back/woods/gravel pit/field with the big tractor.
We just started using snow tires a couple years ago, grew up outside Buffalo and been up here almost 19 years and have never used them, what a difference.
I really want to get a set of ag tires, debating whether or not to get an extra set of rims and just change them myself instead of having the shop swap out the tires twice a year.
