In a place like central fl,you can grow food year rd. My mother in law has an acre and does not use much of it and i think she only buys meats and noodles at the grocery store
here in the northeast, things are a lot different. My question is this, what do you do in the non growing season? is it necessary to have a green house. does a root cellar need light or is a basement/garage sufficient. where does hunting/fishing/crabbing come in to play. dehydration and canning seems necessary etc
this is a lot of stuff to be learned and im wondering about the order to this
my next big project is to start hunting. Id prefer rifle, but with a bow in CT you can take as many deer as you want from sept 15 to jan 31 (because of overpopulation) on private lands.
You can even donate to a foodbank if you are good/lucky at hunting
im sort of rambling here, any ideas. only livestock i could keep would be chickens for some eggs.

Of course in the winter you can hunt. If it is just you and Mrs. Gusto 2 deer a year should be plenty of meat. Fall & spring you have squirrel and turkey as well. You can fish in the spring too.
You definitely want to grow enough food to can so you can have vegetables in the winter, but there are also stuff like pumpkins that don't get harvested until late in the year.
KVR posted that barrel root cellar video in another thread so I don't think it has to have light. It is probably better if it don't.
