Goats are browsers not grazers. They will gladly eat your bushes, trees, berry canes... pretty much anything above their knee level. Their natural instinct is to grab a bite here, a bite there, but rarely off of the ground. This is because they are very susceptible to worms and worm eggs are all over the grass on the ground. Worms are the number one goat killer! So they will gladly eat your garden or your roses, but not your grass unless they are starved. Sheep will mow your yard for you, as will cows and horses which are all grazers...Notice where my goat is eating? Look at all that nice grass around her feet! She won't touch it but the cows sure will! Exception... I have seen Boer goats graze like cows. The owner said he wormed regularly.

there is a breed of pig that is suppose to be a grazer and not a rooter, I think it's the black heritage, I have to look that up

Good points. Thanks HFF. I'm not quite sure what I need. I guess I would like some grazing animals for keeping the grass low on our existing field and would like an animal that could tear up the ground, uproot small trees, etc. for the areas I want to clear out. Sounds like 2 different animals.

My "next door neighbor" who is a seasonal hunter and a great guy begged me not to get pigs. I think he would be afraid of the smell. Whatever animals we get I think I would only have us get 2 of each -- we don't have tons of room and this is all an experiment.

how close is the neighbor? the smell will be minimal if they have enough room and you add straw and lime to their bathroom area

He has a hunting place whatever is 10 acres-wide away. I doubt he could even tell if I had 2 pigs out there, I think he is more concerned with his hunting paradise being ruined by some city guy who doesn't know what the heck he is doing.
