what do you teach in the course?

I teach the basics for the facility...

The quick run down is:

-what will be said on the PA system.

-do not respond to where the alert is (you don't want people to run in and become cannon fodder)

-'try' to make patient's safe.

-don't panic (to the best of your ability at least)

-make sure your damn cell phones are on silent.

-call 911 with any possible description/data (how many, clothes, hair, type and # of weapons, etc)

-Assess your options...you really only have 3...1) get out, 2) hide out, 3) fight it out.

-When LEO is there show your hands and follow their direction, they don't know if you are safe.

There are a number of other things, these are the basics of it.

Of course people should know where all the exits/stairs are and have Situational Awareness...and shut the hell up, you don't need to draw attention to yourself.

The vast majority of people pay attention, but most have no clue about so many things.  They don't know what a gun shot sounds like, they don't know how to defend themselves, they don't know how to shut up...

One of the best emergency weapons...a Fire Extinguisher...blow that off in someone's face...put them down real quick.

...stay away from the panicked, the criers, and the one's that won't shut up...they are a calling card for trouble in such a situation.

...if you really know your way around the area...turn out the lights.
