Hey guys,

So I just got back from the gun store where I picked up my Mosin Nagant!! I'm totally stoked, as this is my first one. I'm a bit intimidated on cleaning this thing, as its covered in cosmoline. After checking out Youtube vids on it I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow (working tonight).

Here's a crappy cell phone pic of the gun, its all I could get at the moment. Tomorrow I'll get some good video of it though. It came with the pouches and a bayonet. Inside the pouches were the tools for the gun and an oil can. I already removed the cosmoline off the oil can by soaking it in mineral spirits and using a rag to wipe it clean. I play on using this method for the parts tomorrow, and as for the stock I plan on letting it sit in the sun and just using a rag to wipe shit off.

I've heard of Windex to help clean the gun after shooting, but you're the first I've seen to advise using it in the Cosmoline removal process. This stuff is caked on and inside the barrel and all the parts pretty good. I can't see windex even making a dent. Any tips?

The sooner the better, but I fear that it maybe a few days or even weeks because of the silly laws here in NJ. Hopefully soon though!

Just used a rag on the outside, ran about 50 patches through it, then started with the windex and Hoppes #9.

By the way, you will never get it 100% clean. You can run patches through all day long and they will just keep coming out dirty. Just get most of it off. After you shoot just pour water or windex down the barrel and then use Hoppes or Ballistol when you put it away and it will be just fine.
