and not by my choice, I have had a concealed weapons permit since 1994, started carrying while we lived in Pennsylvania, then when we moved to Maine. Maine's permits are good for 4 years and mine is up for renewal this year. To get your permit here in Maine, you have to take a NRA class, fill out the paperwork, take to town office, police chief does background check, signs off, sends into to state, takes about 8 weeks to get back, when you renew you just go sign a form, they do a new background check and reissue, no problems.

I got this letter in the mail yesterday

Dear Kyle

This letter is to inform you that your concealed weapons permit is about to expire this year and there are new requirements in order to renew it.

Starting last year, even on renewals we have to have you fill out the whole application again unless we have your old one on file. Along with that we will also need a copy of your handgun safety, drivers license, birth certificate, DD2-14, hunting license and last concealed weapons permit. It takes about 3-4 weeks to get the background information back, so the sooner you can get the application back to us the better. That way we can make sure to have everything back before your current permit expires. The fee for renewal is 20 dollars.

A former police chief who is now a current assistant sheriff comes in once a week with his wife to eat and I showed him the letter, he was shocked, said he hadn't heard this, said he had never had to request all that info, basically everything they would need would be in the background check. Asked Rinkus last night in chat if he had heard this, nope. I have a issue with supplying the town with all this. I checked the Maine application and it does now say all those forms are required. I'm gonna go talk to the chief monday morning.

Am I wrong in this?

The funny thing as we had this idiot sheriff make this statement a couple weeks ago

this story is developing, supposedly the doctor is not a part of the sherrif's department, doesn't even work for the county and should never have been issued a sheriff's office ID

Like I said in chat, if you plan on OC, know your case law like this fella did. Chances are you WILL have an encounter like this guy did and knowing that case law is the only thing that will keep you out of trouble.

Im taking my CCW class next Saturday. We can't carry in NJ, but the second I'm out of the state, I'm good to go.

I can't imagine open carrying around here. Everyone remotely close to NYC lives such a sheltered life and has no idea what the rest of the country is like. My wife was in a bit of culture shock the first time I brought her down to my parents house in rural Va. She couldn't believe my uncles shot their pistols in the back yard and people were hunting in the national forest behind our place.

yeah, for people not raised around them it can be shocking for sure, my wife had never really shot before we met, her father had guns, but she was never involved with them, when we started dating I would take her shooting, which she totally loved, it actually brought her and her father closer, because she was the only one out of the 4 daughters who would go out shooting with her father, they always made it a priority for the two of them to go to the range when ever she went back home or he came up to visit.

Can you not have a PA permit with living in Maine?

I live in Idaho, but my permit was issued by Arizona.
