Those are some good points. For now I'm considering putting my shotgun on my wife's side until I get a pistol for her.
As far as point #2 goes, I disagree somewhat. I think an intruder seeing the light coming down the stairs would serve as a bit of a warning and give them cause to run away, which would help to avoid having to shoot somebody or possibly be shot. I also think having a light on the pistol is better because it keeps both your hands on your weapon. This ensures those first 3 shots are as accurate as they can be, which is important because its not who fires first, but who hits the target first. I just prefer to shoot with two hands instead of one, but I've heard the argument from both sides and can honestly say neither are wrong imo, it just depends on your preference.
Deep Thoughts by Moro:
1. you may run into the popo when shtf because someone else called them. everyone armed or unarmed will be treated like a suspect. apologies come after the parties are identified. i.e. drop the &^&% weapon and get on the ground. the level of response will depend on several factors including those found to be armed.
2. if there is an open door to your home, there is a possibility that entry will be made depending on the crime, witness reports and the response or lack there of of parties within. refer to #1 as to how stuff goes down.
3. clear if you got the training...but if you had been well trained you know that a dude lying in a spot with cover and concealment has got the advantage over a dude clearing every single time. try going up narrow stairs to the second floor and see what breaks the plain first. have your wife lie flat on the floor in wait with a weapon as you ascend and have her cry out when she sees you. she will see you before you see her.
4. if youre gonna clear...cheat. its your house. you should know where the problems are. use objects to make some areas inaccessible and illuminate others.
Great points, Moro!
The benefit of living in New Hampshire is that the cops assume everyone is carrying since we're an open carry state. When I went outside to talk to the cops I put my pistol on top of the tire on my jeep so as not to approach the cops while armed. After talking for 10 minutes I asked him why he didnt knock a 2nd time and he said "This is New Hampshire, I didnt want to get shot". Of course we dont just shoot through the door after a 2nd knock at midnight, but I think it was a statement more about the likelihood that I'd have answered the door with a gun in his face as far as he was concerned. I cant imagine what it would be like to respond this way to what I thought was an intruder only to have the cop ask to see my permit and try to confiscate my pistol.
