ATLANTA — A man carrying a rifle inside the Atlanta airport wasn’t breaking any laws, but he did raise a few eyebrows, including those of some Atlanta police officers.
Jim Cooley says he carried his gun through the terminal when he and his wife went to drop his daughter off for her flight. He says he knew he wasn’t breaking any rules because he has a full understanding of Georgia’s gun laws.
“You can carry in unsecured areas of the airport. Past TSA, never,” Cooley said.
That’s exactly what he did. Cooley carried his AR-15 fully loaded with a 100-round drum through parts of the terminal.
“You never know where something might happen,” said Cooley, posing here with his daughter at the airport.
He took photos and videos of himself in the airport. Cooley then sent those videos to Channel 2 Action News via Facebook.
Cooley says he was first approached by a fire marshal who asked him why he was carrying the gun in the airport. He was then approached by an APD officer, who asked him about the gun and whether he was permitted to carry the weapon.
“I told her I was carrying this for safety when she asked me why,” Cooley posted on Facebook.
Cooley says as he and his wife began to leave the airport the APD officer stopped him again and radioed to others that he was carrying an automatic weapon. Cooley says he was then followed to his car by a police lieutenant and two officers, who took pictures of their car.
“It shouldn’t matter what I carry, just that I choose to carry,” Cooley said. “You never know where something might happen.”
Hank Johnson weighs in
WASHINGTON — In response to the recent perfectly legal brandishing of a loaded AR-15 in Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Lithonia, introduced a bill today to extend airport gun bans outside security.
The Airport Security Act would allow gun owners to carry unloaded firearms in a locked case, while banning loaded weapons in the airport’s non-secure areas.
While loaded guns currently are not allowed through security, local laws apply at the check-in, baggage claim and elsewhere. Hence Jim Cooley, of Barrow County, carried his rifle (plus a 100-round drum magazine) around Hartsfield-Jackson earlier this month and took offense when questioned by a police officer

A Fort Bragg soldier has been released to his company commander after his arrest on charges of creating a panic at a North Carolina mall for allegedly showing up with an AR-15 assault-type rifle and bulletproof vest.
Bryan Scott Wolfinger, 25, was taken into custody Thursday evening outside the Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville and charged with "going armed to the terror of the public," the Associated Press reported.
Fayetteville police said in a statement that Wolfinger was arrested "without incident."
Police said the soldier was allegedly preparing to have photograph taken with the military equipment — including an AR-15 rifle, Kevlar vest and multiple ammunition magazines — when police began getting 911 calls about an armed male walking through Macy's.
WTVD-TV. however, reports that Wolfinger's 90-minute session at Picture This Portrait Studio was also over and he was leaving the studio at the time.
The unidentified photographer told WTVD that the studio will no longer conduct photo sessions with people using weapons as accessories.
