A little back story on this one. My wife has been working hard to get our overgrown back yard cleaned up over the past few weeks, since I've been working 6 days a week. Last Friday when I got home from work, she wanted to show me a spot she was thinking about using as a burn area for the limbs and what not she's cleaned up. As she was walking towards the woods she did a 180 and started coming back towards me high stepping like "Neon" Deion Sanders... She didn't have to say anything, I already knew what was up, she had seen a snake. I go to where she was and see a copperhead that "looks" like it's crawling in a hole. I send her in for my 12 gauge and dispatch the snake. I decide to pull it out of the hole to see how big it was and discovered that I "killed" an already dead snake, as it had no head on it. Something had apparently dragged it to the hole to finish off it's meal. Needless to say, she was freaked out. She asked if I had a gun she could carry with her while she's working in the yard, and although I do have a .38 derringer, I told her I haven't been able to find any rat shot for it so it wouldn't do her much good. I then made my sales pitch and told her I'd been thinking about getting a Taurus Judge, and how it would work well for her to kill any snakes she ran across. The response was an immediate "get one".
I started browsing the gun pages on Facebook and ran across a guy with a polymer Public Defender with ammo needing some quick cash, so I was able to get the gun plus 20 rounds of 300 grain "bear load" hp's, 15 rounds of 225 grain Winchester PDX1 hp's, 15 rounds of Barnes Vortx 200 grain hp's, and 15 rounds of federal #4 .410 pistol loads. I think I got a decent deal, gun + ammo for $400. Hopefully this will make the wife happy, unless she tries to shoot one of those bear loads, they are a beast...

I've got a few theories on what killed the snake; possibly an armadillo, as we're starting to be invaded by those evil opossums on a half shell. Another theory I have is a feral cat, I've seen one in the woods behind the house, but it bolts every time it spots me. And the final theory, which I would never share with my wife, is that she killed it when she was weed eating the area and didn't notice it at the time.
I shot a #4 shot .410 shell last night, and it had very little felt recoil. There was some muzzle flip, but the felt recoil through the grip was small. I haven't had a chance to fire any of the .45 LC rounds yet.

With her reaction I knew she had seen a snake, but I was expecting a rat snake or black racer or something else non-poisonous, definitely wasn't expecting to see a copperhead. After I shot it I went across the street to let my neighbor know what was going on (older lady, didn't want to freak her out hearing gunshots at dusk) and she said her husband has already killed two timber rattlers in their yard and one copperhead that was inside the house. Looks like it's going to be a bad year for poisonous snakes down here.
